Every person living in Australia should examine the condition of their skin on a regular basis and it’s important to know about the ABCDE’s of melanoma. These are a set of guidelines that can help you identify potential signs of skin cancer early on.

Asymmetry

Melanomas are often asymmetrical, meaning that one half of the mole or lesion looks different from the other half.

Border

The borders of a melanoma are typically irregular or poorly defined, rather than smooth and even.

Colour

Melanomas may have a variety of colors, ranging from shades of brown and black to red, white, or blue.

Diameter

Melanomas are usually larger in diameter than regular moles or lesions, typically measuring around 6 millimeters or more.

Evolution

Any mole or lesion that changes in size, shape, or color over time may be a cause for concern.

** Remember that these guidelines are just that – guidelines. Not all melanomas will exhibit all of these characteristics, and not all irregular moles or lesions are cancerous. However, if you notice any of these signs on your skin, it’s important to call us right away.
